It occurs to me that I kind of dumped my readers in medias res last week. So this week I will backtrack and explain WHAT I am doing here in the Philippines, and WHO I am doing it with!
The short of the explanation is that I needed to take classes this summer in order to graduate on time, I look for every excuse to get out of the country, and I conveniently happen to have cousins in the Philippines who are taking classes I need to take. Yes, it was a bit of a perfect storm.
So, this summer I am attending DeLaSalle University - Manila. I am taking 9 credits of classes: International Economics( taught by J.P.), Development Economics( taught by Mitzie), and Industrial Organization(taught by Dr. Tanchuco). I am living with my second cousins - my grandfather was brothers with their grandfather, and their parents.
The cast of characters includes:
Tito Bobbit: Tito just means uncle - he is my mother's cousin. He is an engineer.
Tita Ruby: Again tita just means aunt - I think this is the same in Spanish. She does many things, among which is run a booth selling purses and shirts at the local mall.
Marc: The oldest of my cousins - he is an engineer as well. He doesn't live at home during the week, but we see him on the weekends.
Carl: The second of the brothers, also an engineer. Same story with coming at home on the weekends.
JanVit: The third brother. He graduated with his degree in mechanical engineering (it runs in the family) this spring, but is spending the summer studying to take the board exam in the fall.
Erle: The Girl! She is also a junior in Economics and will probably figure the most prominently in this blog as one of my classes is with her and all of my classes are with her friends.
Kyle: The youngest brother who is a sophomore in mechanical engineering.
There are also a variety of help who cycle through both domestic and those who work in the bakery run out of the upstairs of the house. I will try to introduce them better, but the usual ones are out of town visiting family right now so its a bit of a revolving door.
Anyone else I come across I will try to explain as I encounter them.
There's the basic introduction, and I'm sure I will have other more interesting musings to post about next week!
All of the pictures are from the main courtyard of my school.
Hola, chica! Your Aunt Kit told me this is where I could find you, so hello from the other side of the planet! I am getting the cat update from Williamsburg even as I type.
ReplyDeleteThe school looks very impressive--I hope they make you welcome there.
We are having baby bird season here, and baby squirrel season. I am up to my eyebrows in overdue book and books to be given positive I-like-this-book quotes, and WW I fiction and nonfiction.
So whatcha studying? Just econ courses for summer?
